FOUR homes in St Neots were struck by lightning in the thunderstorms this morning (Tuesday).
A lightning bolt blew a hole in the roof of a home in Maule Close, Eynesbury, shortly after midnight. Firefighters from St Neots and Sandy used thermal imaging cameras to search for a fire but nothing was discovered.
The house was cordoned off and the occupants were advised to remain out of the property. The crews left at 12.50am.
At the same time lightning struck a home in Poppyfields, Eynesbury. A crew from St Neots was sent but no fire was found. The crew left by 12.20am.
Firefighters returned to Poppyfields at 1.10am after another property was hit by lightning. They checked the premises for signs of fire but nothing was discovered and they left the scene at 1.50am.
A number of homes around Chapman Way, Eynesbury, were left without power after a home was hit by lightning at 1.50am. The crew from St Neots checked the scene for signs of a fire but found nothing and left the scene at 2.15am.
At 2.35am a house in Oakwood Drive, Great Cambourne, was struck and 10 minutes later a lorry in a lay-by on the A1198 at Caxton was struck. Firefighters extinguished a fire that had broken out in the cab. The driver was out by the time the firefighters arrived.
Crews from Kimbolton, Thrapston and Sawston were called to an electricity pole arching near an electricity substation on the High Street in Brington. Firefighters ensured the area was safe until a UK Power Networks engineer arrived.
In total 12 properties in Cambridgshire were stuck by lightning last night.
