Officers reopened the A14 spur just before 6pm, about eight hours after the accident at about 10am today.

A lorry carrying clothing overturned and the spur between junction 23 and the A1M/A14 was shut off while the lorry and boxes of clothing were recovered.

Drivers as far away as the M25 were advised to use the A1 instead of the M11 to avoid congestion.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said there were also delays on the A428 westbound approach to the A1 as traffic diverted from the A14.

She added: “We have worked hard with Cambridgeshire Police to have the road cleared as quickly as possible, but there are still delays in the area.”
