A St Ives man has created a wildlife garden on his garage roof to support and encourage biodiversity.

Rowan Byrne, a marine biologist, of Greenfields, spent three days with pal Jamie Clabburn transforming the 22ft-long roof into a haven for flowers, insects and bees.

Rowan, who works for Mott MacDonald Ecology Division, Cambridge, said: “I think everyone should do their bit where they can and support mother nature.”

The pals reinforced the roof before laying a waterproof lining, 10 bags of compost and 46 plants.

Rowan added: “I’m not sure if it is the first rooftop garden in St Ives, but I think it is probably the first one in Greenfields.

“There is a serious educational message here but it has also been fun. A bit more rain would help though.”
