More than 300 walkers and runners took part in this year’s 46-mile Pathfinder March linking the four original Pathfinder Stations of RAF Wyton, Graveley, Oakington and Warboys – and one finished in record time.
People from both military and civilian backgrounds took on the annual challenge on Saturday (June 20), which has been going since 1997.
First to finish was Simon Margot, 36, who completed the entire route in six hours, 37 minutes - a new record for the event by 15 minutes.
Simon, from Hemingford Grey, a self-employed physio, said: “Finishing first, and in a good time was a pleasant surprise. I just ran at a comfortable pace throughout, and enjoyed the day.
“The route we took was beautiful, and the varied landscape made competing a real pleasure. What with having some good company from fellow runners and walkers, and friendly marshals at every checkpoint along the way, the whole event felt like a good day out, and I hardly noticed I was running.”
Among the others taking part was was Will King, 17, an A-level student at Hinchingbrooke School, who is a cadet with 73 Sqn (Huntingdon) ATC and would like to become an engineer in the RAF.
He completed a leg of the march as part of a relay with fellow cadets from the unit.
The march is held to remember those involved with the 19 Second World War Pathfinder Squadrons, and Flight Sergeant Percy Cannings, from Buckden, was one of the veterans present who met participants.
