Another church in Huntingdonshire has been stripped of lead by thieves – the second such attack inside a month.

Thousands of pounds worth of lead lining the entire north aisle and part of the south aisle at St Michael’s Church, in Great Gidding, was stolen overnight between November 25 and 26.

The attack came less than a month after a similar incident at All Saints Church, in nearby Winwick, in which a large quantity of lead was taken.

Rev Mary Jepp, who is responsible for both churches, said she was “devastated” by the attack.

She said: “Part of the roof that was damaged was above the organ, which allowed water in and may well have damaged that too. It is really, really sad.”

The church organ dates back to 1870 and parishioners are facing a nervous wait to find out if the water has caused serious damage to the instrument.

Organist Michael Keck said: “By the process of drying out, we are waiting to see how it has been affected. It is a significant instrument.”

Insurers have been contacted and investigating how much damage has been called to the church. According to the Diocese of Ely, a church has stood on the site in Great Gidding for about 800 years.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said that officers were called to investigate after reports that “water had started leaking through the roof” of the church. The spokesman added that no arrests had yet been made.
