Bomb disposal experts were called after builders discovered anti-aircraft shells at a site in Somersham.
The Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team from RAF Wittering, near Peterborough, were called to a site in High Street on Sunday, after reports that a set of four 40mm anti-aircraft rounds had been unearthed.
Cambridgeshire police also attended the scene.
A spokesman for the force said: “We received reports of the discovery of Second World War shells at a builder’s site in High Street, Somersham.
“The EOD attended the scene on to carry out a controlled explosion which happened at approximately 12.30pm.”
A spokesman for the EOD team said the shells were live and were taken to a nearby field, with the permission of the landowner, where a controlled explosion was carried out.
“Landowners and farmers give us massive support, thank you NFU Countryside,” the spokesman added.
