Royal wedding fever swept Huntingdonshire on Saturday as communities came together to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The happy couple tied the knot at Windsor Castle as crowds lined the streets of the town and millions of people across the country watched the event televised live.
In Huntingdonshire, a range of events to mark the occasion were held, including live streams, tea parties, and barbecues. Here are just a few of the events that took place in the district:
• Old Weston held a joint celebration on Saturday, when the royal wedding coincided with the official opening of the first phase of the children’s’ playground refurbishment.
Villagers enjoyed a street party outside the village hall. The children competed in a scavenger hunt and best crown competition, while the adults enjoyed a relaxed picnic and drinks in the new picnic area.
During the street party Mandy Thompson performed the opening ceremony of the new playground equipment, which was funded by a grant from the Amey Community Fund.
• Pupils from years one and two at Kimbolton Prep Schoo held Royal wedding celebrations. They took part in a wedding assembly. Reception and year 6 pupils enjoyed a barbecue and picnic lunch on the school grounds.
• The Mill House pub at Hartford held a royal wedding party in its Wacky Warehouse.
A spokesman for the pub said: “It was absolutely fantastic. It was really busy.”
• At the Duchess pub, in Fenstanton, the occasion was celebrated with a barbecue, live screening of the event, and a bake-off competition. Dozens of people flocked to the pub to enjoy the weather and the event, with plenty of revellers waving their Union Jacks too.
• The Friends of St Ives Corn Exchange hosted a live stream of the wedding on Saturday and guests were also treated to a picnic-style lunch and hot drink on arrival.
• Youngsters at Hartford Infant School made chocolate cakes decorated with iconic British symbols like traditional postboxes at a party to celebrate the wedding. They made union flags to wave and staff served the pupils with drinks while they toasted the royal couple’s health.
• Pupils at Ramsey Spinning Infants School held an arts and crafts event, producing a number of royal-themed creations. Florist Penny Allen, of Flowers by Penny, created special button holes for the occasion, and residents at the Hillings care home, in Eaton Socon, gathered together to watch the event take place live.
