A project to connect communities with local wildlife at Hanson's Needingworth quarry, St Ives, has been selected to participate in the fifth round of a global biodiversity competition, the Quarry Life Awards.

Hanson produces and distributes materials from the quarry, and its project is one of just six schemes in the UK selected to participate in the competition.

The competition is run every three years by Hanson’s parent company HeidelbergCement to raise the understanding of the biodiversity value of quarrying sites during and after extraction and share new best practices.

The unit manager at Needingworth, Hilton Law, said: “We are delighted that Needingworth is host to this exciting community scheme and look forward to seeing how it informs best practice in enhancing biodiversity and restoration at our site.”

The project, coordinated by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, will restore Needingworth into a wetland habitat and create new circular walking routes giving access to locals from the village.

The project is competing at the national level, and the winner will receive £5,000 and progress to the international level, competing for the £26,000 prize for the best overall project.
