More than 120 jobs are at risk as Co-operative Food proposes to close its Huntingdon depot by the end of summer.

Employees were told last week of the planned closure that would see 123 employees at risk of redundancy, although the Co-op has said it will make efforts to find workers jobs within its group or another employer.

A spokesman for Co-operative Food said: “Due to ongoing surplus capacity at our Huntingdon depot, and in order to drive efficiencies and deliver a cost-effective quality service to our stores and customers, regrettably we are proposing to close the depot.

“This proposal is in no way a reflection on the commitment and hard work of all the staff involved. The trade unions are being consulted about these proposed changes and we will keep colleagues fully updated.”

Work will be transferred to Castlewood, Thurrock and Andover depots.
