WHEN leaving for work on Tuesday May 8, I saw that an obscene word had been carved in to the driver's door of my car and the same word attempted to be written on the bonnet.

I was inclined to think the act was performed while my car was left overnight unattended in the St Neots market square car park on Sunday. May 6.

I took some comfort in the thought that the mindless individual who damaged my vehicle most likely would have been captured on the closed circuit television situated around the car park, which all other St Neots residents and I are paying for.

I cannot be positive of the location where the damage occurred but was convinced that the police would be able to confirm my prediction from the CCTV images or dismiss it.

However, this didn't prove to be the case. The police said they did not have the resources to check the camera footage. Although a criminal offence had taken place, they were not willing to investigate it further.

I offered to view the footage myself, not only to help save on resources but potentially to catch the hooligan responsible.

My offer was declined.

What type of message are they sending to these vandals? That it is acceptable for them to damage other people's property with no fear of any consequences, while the hard-working taxpayer is left to foot the bill for their appalling behaviour?

Like many others, I am struggling financially, getting a foot on the property ladder, with my current budget not allowing for the likes of vehicle re-sprays.

Yet I have no choice but to have this work done to remove the obscenities.
