SIMON Bunn had hoped to be at the Autumn Charity Ball, a fun-filled fundraiser that is taking place in St Ives next month.

But the 41-year-old from Huntingdon had his life cut short by cancer.

And it all happened at a frightening pace.

He was diagnosed with a rare, genetic form of the disease in November 2011 and by May of this year, the cancer had taken his life.

It had been one of his wishes that the ball was organised to show his appreciation of Macmillan Cancer Support and the Woodlands Centre at Hinchingbrooke Hospital – two organisations that helped him during his illness.

Deborah Reynolds, Sue Campbell and Maria O’Neill are helping to ensure that wish is fulfilled.

Simon, who worked for Speedy Hire, was married to Mrs Reynolds’s niece, Joanna.

“He was a fantastic boy and he wanted to do something for Macmillan as they helped him from the word go,” Mrs Reynolds, a district councillor, said.

“He thought he would still be here for the ball but the cancer, which was found in his colon, spread to his lungs and liver. Despite his courage and determination, his battle was lost and he sadly died in May this year.”

Simon had attended a previous ball that Mrs Reynolds helped to organise in 2010 – that occasion was in aid of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust.

“Simon asked, before he died, if we would organise another event to show his appreciation and gratitude for care and support he was given by Macmillan and the Woodlands Centre,” Mrs Reynolds added.

“While we are saddened by his death, we are delighted to fulfil his wish.”

The organisers are promising an evening of fun and surprises with a six course meal and live music, magicians and caricature artists.

There will also be a raffle with some fabulous prizes on offer.

INFORMATION: The ball takes place on Friday, October 12, at the Burgess Hall, St Ives, starting at 7pm for 7.30pm. Carriages are at 1am. Tickets cost 39.50 and the dress code is black tie and vibrant colours. Call Deborah Reynolds on 07816 306345.
