A WOMAN whose city broker husband died from a shotgun wound to his groin has been released on police bail.

Karen Woodward, 37, was ordered to return to Huntingdon Police Station on February 1 after facing 48 hours of questions about the death of her husband Simon on Thursday evening.

Mr Woodward, 42, was shot in the upstairs bedroom of the couple’s Swan Cottage home in Swan Road, Fenstanton. Police were called to the address at 11.30pm on Thursday evening after neighbours reported hearing the sound of screaming.

Police say they are keeping an open mind as to how her husband came to be shot.

The couple have two primary-school aged children who are believed to have been in the house at the time of the incident. They are being looked after by a family member.

Mrs Woodward spent more than 48 hours under arrest at Huntingdon Police Station facing questions relating to the incident but was released on bail yesterday (Sunday).

Mr Woodward was a keen shot and had been due to attend a shoot in Fen Drayton this weekend, which was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Mr Woodward worked for Primex Energy Brokers in London, while his wife was a horse enthusiast and worked for 10 months in Fenstanton pub The George until last summer.

On Friday, villagers gave their reaction to the death to The Hunts Post.

Pensioner Malcolm Bowles, of Swan Gardens, was a gardener at Swan Cottage around two years ago. He said: “They seemed like a normal couple — a lovely couple. They had children and you would never have guessed anything was wrong.”

Another neighbour, who described herself as a friend of the couple but did not wish to be named, said: “They had been married for a long time and were a nice couple — we used to go out for meals together.

“She was seen around the village a lot walking her dog. I am just so sorry for everyone involved — Simon, the children and Karen.”

Parish council chairman Dr Bob Henderson, said: “The village is in shock. No-one can have expected anything like this.”
