I WOULD like to congratulate our chief constable in raising the success of our local police from the bottom of the police league table to somewhere in the average field. However, is this success because in the past, either nothing has been achieved when crime is reported or that sentencing has been unrealistic, so that people are not bothering to report crime?

Although major crimes may be on the decline, many minor offences which effect ordinary citizens are not being taken seriously. As the paper comments, mobile phone use whilst driving is pandemic, litter and parking on yellow lines are not being addressed and, with the great increase in the force's numbers, we still wonder where all the police are.
