DURING the last year we have been in recession, with many people having their incomes fall or receiving no increase whatsoever.

The total Council Tax has increased by 3.3 per cent with St Ives Town Council charging 8.8 per cent, Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridgeshire police three per cent.

The BBC has recently announced that the average Council Tax rise in England is 1.8 per cent yet we are constantly told that Council Tax in Cambridgeshire is one of the lowest in England, a fact that is very hard to believe.

What protection does the UK Government give, by capping or other means, to ensure that we are protected against extortionate demands such as that from the town council?

Quite simply we cannot afford these extortionate increases, year in year out.
