TWO years of research have created a new exhibition that celebrates a 'forgotten period' in St Neots' history - a time when the area was known for its spa water.

Black and white photographs from the 1950s and 60s will form part of a display which opens in the town on Saturday (October 25).

The images featured include a group of St Neots rowers passing under the town's river bridge in 1952 and St Neots County Primary School football team in 1951.

There is also a photo of the Berkeley Street garage in Eynesbury in 1953 and St Neots spa water spring at Little Paxton in 1952. The spa was founded near to Little Paxton bridge in the 1890s and at the time St Neots was marketed as a spa town.

The spa was later forgotten but was revived in the 1960s when the water was bottled and sold.

Anna Mercer, curator at St Neots Museum, who has helped organise the exhibition, said: "We feel that the 50s and 60s is a slightly neglected period of the town's history.

"It was a time when the town was expanding and we want people to come and share their memories of life in the town during that period.

"We would love for people to come along and shed light on the people in the pictures or bring along some of their own."

The show, called Where I Live: St Neots in the 1950s and 1960s, is part of the St Neots Community Archive Group exhibition and will be at St Mary's Parish Church Hall, Great North Road, Eaton Socon.

The exhibition has been paid for by a grant from St Neots Town Council and is the result of nearly two year's research.

Displays will also include video footage of the town's 1970 carnival and displays from Colmworth and St Neots Local History societies, Eatons Community Association and Huntingdon and Ramsey Community Archive groups.

INFORMATION: The exhibition is open from 10am to 3.30pm. To see some of the photos to be displayed as part of the exhibition, visit www.ccan.co.uk. Call 01480 476608 for details about the event.
