TEENAGERS have been filming their friends jumping - and being pushed - from a road bridge into the River Great Ouse in a stunt labelled as "dangerous" and "idiotic".

A 60-second video clip of the teenagers - apparently filmed on a mobile phone - was posted on the video-sharing website YouTube on Saturday.

The video shows a group of youngsters climbing over the side of the St Neots river bridge and jumping 15ft into the river below. One youth is even shoved into the river by a friend.

While the hot weather has made the jump into the river tempting, there are hidden dangers beneath the water that could put lives at risk, according to one town councillor.

Derek Giles told The Hunts Post: "Their actions are utterly stupid and irresponsible.

"These idiots seem to be unaware of the dangers of the old bridge foundations and other obstacles below the surface.

"I sincerely hope that the parents of these young lads stress these dangers to their children before we have yet another tragic death in the river."

There have also been reports of teenagers jumping from Coneygeare Bridge in Eynesbury.

A spokesman for St Neots Town Council said a group of 10 or 15 youngsters had been seen jumping into the river from the lower bridge on Sunday.

On the YouTube clip, which had already been viewed by more than 50 people, voices can be heard encouraging the youths to jump from the bridge. At one point, a voice is heard saying: "There's probably nothing down there" and "Greg, just go push him".

A police spokesman said: "It is incredibly dangerous for anyone to jump off bridges and into water. Without knowing the depth, what is below the surface or the strength of any current, someone could get into difficulties.

"Parents, please highlight to your children how dangerous this can be. We do not want a summer activity to turn into a summer tragedy."

In February 2005, 20-year-old Damien Houston, from Eaton Ford, drowned after jumping into the River Great Ouse from the St Neots bridge. He had been out drinking in the town before jumping from the bridge in the early hours of the morning.
