THE flooding problems at St Ives and Godmanchester have been made worse by the blocking up of London Road viaduct at St Ives, adjacent to the Dolphin car park.
The viaduct was designed and built to allow flood waters to pass freely along the flood plain with as little impediment as possible.
At some time in recent history, the viaduct was bricked up, effectively creating a large dam directly across the stream of any flood waters.
Clearing the viaduct of in-fill would significantly reduce the height of flood levels at St Ives and at Godmanchester, and would eliminate the need for flood defences.
The viaduct could be made into an attractive feature at a small cost if the in-fill were cleared.
