THE family of a young mother who was killed when her car left the road and collided with trees believe she will live on as a guardian angel to her 16-week- old son.

Rachel Jackson had been heading home after dropping off her boyfriend at his house when she lost control of her Peugeot 306 on the A1 near St Neots.

The 25-year-old, from Dukes Drive, Ramsey Forty Foot, who was described as a wonderful mum and a free spirit, was alone in the car at the time of crash.

In an interview, Rachel's family told The Hunts Post it was just fortunate baby Dominic had not been in the car.

Rachel's mum, Liz Fairclough, said: "Rachel was on her way back home after dropping off her partner, Paul, in St Neots when the accident happened.

"She was overtaking on a bend when she lost control and the car hit some trees. She was thrown from the car and a motorist stopped and stayed with her until an ambulance arrived.

"She had asked the man who was with her to telephone me, but by the time I got on the phone she had lost consciousness. Her last words were 'I want my mum'."

She added: "We are not Christians but we have to believe there is something after death or it's just too scary.

"My friend told me the other day that Rachel has gone on to become Dominic's guardian angel and I think we are all holding on to that thought."

Rachel was born in Primrose Lane in Huntingdon and attended Ramsey Abbey School.

"She was a dreamy little girl. She would go upstairs for something and come back down a short while later with something else," Mrs Fairclough said.

"She was a fantastic mother. She knew exactly what Dominic needed and what to do with him. She loved him unconditionally and said he was the best thing that had ever happened to her."

Her stepfather, Mick Fairclough, said: "It's such a shame that Dominic will never get to know his wonderful mother."

Rachel, who lived with her mother, stepfather and brother Alex, had been planning to move in with her partner of nine years, Paul Van Kerro.

"I was Rachel's first real boyfriend," he said. "We met outside a shop when she pinched my bum. I was quite shocked but I asked her out and we have been together ever since.

"Rachel was such a lovely person and I loved her to bits."

Mrs Fairclough added: "She was like my best friend as well as my daughter and every Sunday we would curl up on the sofa together to watch the Hollyoaks omnibus.

"I think I will still do that as I would like to think she was sitting next to me watching it with me".

Rachel's funeral takes place at Peterborough Crematorium on Monday.
