KATE BERMINGHAM asked people in Huntingdon High Street how they felt about the total ban on smoking in pubs, clubs, restaurants and the workplace.

GREAT IDEA: Mark Sirot-Smith, 38, a business teacher from Needingworth said: "I absolutely agree with it, it's about time. I know they bring in a lot of tax revenue, but there are other ways for the government to find money"

ABOUT TIME: Teresa Snoad, 61, a former teacher from Bury, said: "I'm really glad. When I used to work in a school, people often smoked in the staff room, and I always thought this was unfair on the non-smokers. They should have the freedom to choose whether or not they want to breathe in second-hand smoke."

UNFAIR: Keeley Dooley, 21, a nursery nurse from Huntingdon, said: "It's just ridiculous. Everyone's always going on about equal rights, but when did we get a say in this? Pubs are going to lose trade and people will lose the right to relax and have a cigarette in the pub. I can understand banning it from restaurants, but definitely not from pubs."

OUTRAGED: Rose Furness, 75, retired, from Huntingdon said: "I'm completely disgusted with the outcome. It's down to us if we want to smoke, we can't have the Government making all our decisions for us! I suppose I can see why people want to ban it in restaurants, but couldn't they sort out something like separate smoking rooms in pubs? Either way we should decide ourselves, not be ordered by the Government!"

A GOOD THING: Anthony Bowers, 77, retired, from Huntingdon, said: "I agree with the total ban. I smoked a long time ago, but it is bad for your health and I think everyone should have the right to work and socialise in a clean, smoke-free environment."

FAIR ENOUGH: Keith Taylor, 22, an engineer from Huntingdon, said: "It's only fair for non-smokers to be able to go to the pub without breathing in other people's smoke. I can't say I feel sorry for smokers having to stand outside.
