A NEW 50mph speed limit on Mill Road between Offord Mill bridges and Buckden has been welcomed by residents - so long as the police enforce it.
The limit was agreed by Huntingdonshire's traffic management committee last week after it heard of residents' concerns and the recent safety record. It will be introduced after consultation.
A spokesman for the residents said: "We look forward to the imminent erection of the 50mph speed limit signs.
"The problem of speeding on this stretch of road has been overlooked long enough and we are thrilled that it has now been formally acknowledged.
"The mentality of many drivers on this road is that they must drive as fast as possible and take unnecessary overtaking risks to offset any time they then spend held up by the railway level crossing at Offord."
"The result is that residents entering or exiting their own homes must often contend with speeding vehicles on the wrong side of the road.
"The restriction is a welcome step forward and an essential acceptance that speeding on Mill Road is a serious problem.
"However, limits will not be enough. Enforcement is what matters, and we will continue to press this issue until measures are put in place that will physically slow vehicles down and prevent overtaking."
The committee said it favoured lowering the limit to 40mph over the longer term but believed drivers would not comply if the change were made in a single step.
