PUPILS at Huntingdon Infant School are well cared for by staff, who have a clear focus on raising standards, say Ofsted inspectors.
More than 200 pupils attend the Ambury Road School, which was also praised for the guidance and support it provides.
While standards of reading, writing and mathematics were reported to be below average, the Government inspectors were satisfied the school, its headteacher, Yvonne Lamb, and her senior leadership team were making progress in these areas.
The report said: "The school has a rigorous system for monitoring and evaluating its work. This is resulting in some clear ideas for improvement that teachers are able to put into practice."
Inspectors felt some of the children's education could benefit from more involvement from parents - a factor that could also help to improve the children's below-average attendance.
Also highlighted in the report was the hard work of staff to create bright, interesting and effective learning environments in the classroom.
"Work is well planned and is often well matched to children's prior attainment. Teachers group children accurately and provide appropriate support for the less able where needed.
"The school gives a warm welcome to all children. Arrangements for promoting children's safety and welfare are good.
"Most parents say that they are impressed by the good care, guidance and support that their children receive."
The majority of children were praised for their good behaviour and attitudes to work.
The school was encouraged to continue raising standards and to ensure teachers provide a better focus on more able students, offering them more challenges.
Overall, the inspectors awarded the school's effectiveness a grade 3, which is satisfactory.
Mrs Lamb said: "We were pleased that the inspectors praised the way that staff and children are working together to make sure all children reach the highest possible standards in mathematics and literacy."
