A youngster from Houghton has grown a sunflower that has reached a height of 10ft.

Charlie Rogers Dear, who will be five this month, planted four sunflower seeds in his grandmother's garden in Coronation Avenue, Huntingdon, but he never expected one of them to grow so high.

His grandmother Pauline Dear said: "Charlie is absolutely thrilled at growing such a big sunflower. We are all amazed by the height of it, and it is still growing."

Charlie, who starts at Houghton School at the end of month, grows sunflowers every year, but this one has set a new record for the youngster.

Mrs Dear added: "Charlie's sunflowers usually grow about seven or eight feet high, but this one is huge.

He hasn't done anything different with it - he has just looked after it and watered it every day.

"It is so nice to see someone so young take an interest in gardening.
