THE new Abbey College, Ramsey, opened its doors to students last week. The new school which has resulted from the amalgamation of the town's Ailwyn and Abbey Schools, will cater for students aged 11 to 18.

The site was a hive of activity throughout the summer holidays with contractors making adaptations to the buildings.

Speaking on the first day of the new school, headteacher Wayne Birks said: "I feel proud and privileged to be a part of this new era of educational provision in Ramsey. This moment follows so much hard work which has been carried out in creating Cambridgeshire's latest 11 - 18 school and I would like to pay tribute to everyone who has worked so hard in turning the vision into reality."

The new intake of Year 7 students were the first to enjoy the new facilities when they started on Tuesday, September 5. New pupil, Matthew Johnstone 11, from Somersham, said: "I've really enjoyed the scenery around the school. Many schools are like concrete blocks, but here there are so many trees and open spaces.
