PLANS for a major development in the centre of St Neots including 21 houses and three flats have been met by opposition from the town council planning committee.

The multi-million pound redevelopment at 22 High Street and The Old Forge has been given objected to by St Neots Town Council.

In addition to the housing, the application includes retaining of a retail unit (formerly The Handyman store), the creation of two workshops and new vehicular access from Brook Street and 11 car parking spaces. It also includes the conversion of the Grade II listed Old Forge and a 19th century chapel, into homes.

Councillors felt it was overdevelopment of a conservation area believed the space should be used to attract larger retailers.

Developers Zog Enterprises Ltd said the application aimed to bring the town to life.

Huntingdonshire District Council is expected to make a final decision on the plans by the end of July.
