St Neots cattle: one incident since Middle Ages

WHILE I sympathise with the man injured by cattle near St Neots (The Hunts Post, September 22), I am amazed that some people want them removed from the common land they graze on.

Cows will attack nothing and no one unless frightened or threatened – was this man’s dog on a lead or worrying them by running loose?

A sense of proportion is needed here: animals have been grazing that land since pre-Norman times without once appearing on a list of serial nuisances.

Perhaps one of those road-signs that are often placed near accident blackspots should be erected – ‘Caution, think, slow down. One near-fatality in the last thousand years’.
