FAULTY brakes, illegal tyres and unsecured emergency doors were the more serious defects found on some buses carrying Cambridgeshire's children to school.
Safety inspectors from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) examined 73 buses during a week-long operation and ordered three off the road.
A total of 33 others were found to have faults but were allowed to continue with the promise that defects would be fixed.
Sgt Simon Goldsmith said: "It is quite shocking that such a high percentage of these buses, which carry your children to school, have been found to have defects.
"Thanks to these roadside checks, the faults have been corrected, and enforcement action taken against coach operators who flout the regulations."
The safety checks took place from March 5 to 16 and were a joint operation by police, VOSA and Cambridgeshire County Council.
Two buses carrying children to Bottisham Village College, and one from a Peterborough school, were ordered off the road.
More checks will take place throughout the year.
