WITH plans to mark St George's Day taking shape across England, Cambridgeshire County Council is asking its English residents how they would like to celebrate their patron saint's festival.

In recent years, the images and the flag of St George have begun to be reclaimed from far right political groups, so the council is looking at how best to celebrate the day on Thursday April 23, a spokesman said.

"Ideas so far have included a parade involving schools and young people, exhibitions at local libraries or something more symbolic such as a gathering of everyone who has taken part in a citizenship service since they were introduced in 2005.

"The council has set up a special e-mail address where residents can send their ideas to stgeorge@cambridgeshire.gov.uk," he added.

Council chairman Councillor Tony Orgee said: "In recent years St George's Day has just been a note in a calendar, but across the country more and more people are beginning to celebrate the day.

"In Cambridgeshire we want to know if our residents think we should be celebrating it too and, if so, what we should be doing. We are completely in your hands - if doing something to recognise the country's patron saint is important to you then let us know. Alternatively, if you think the celebration is not a good idea, let us know.
