The national chain has decided to shut its store in St Benedict’s Court as part of a ‘transformation plan’ being carried out by the company.

The shop will close for the final time on Thursday, March 9.

A spokesman said: “We will be e-mailing our customers in the local area to advise of the changes and provide details of the nearest stores, Mothercare Peterborough and Mothercare Grafton Centre.

“We greatly value all our customers in the area and would like to thank them for their continued loyalty and support for Mothercare. Whilst we regret the closure of the store, it is part of a larger transformation plan for our business.”

The spokesman could not confirm how many jobs would be lost as a result of the closure.

Following the news Huntingdon residents have taken to Facebook to share their disappointment, with one user posting: “That’s a real shame for that part of town. You would have hoped that they would hang on for the new shops in town and hope that footfall would improve.”

The retailer has already closed more than 100 UK stores over the past five years and, in November last year, it announced pre-tax losses of £800,000 between February and October.
