I NOTE with interest your lead article on pollution from vehicle exhausts (June 13). You suggest that the removal of the bypass viaduct at Huntingdon railway station will remove this problem from Huntingdon. In an adjacent report Dr Kate King made it clear that the main threat from car emissions is to those nearest to the exhaust level.
At the moment the viaduct carries vehicles way above pedestrians' heads and the roofs of houses. If the viaduct is removed there will be 20,000 extra road movements on the already overcrowded Brampton Road. Far from improving the situation, the removal of the viaduct will greatly increase the risk from exhaust fumes for young children and others.
