A PUBLIC house is likely to be demolished after being gutted by a fire.

The White Hart in Bythorn suffered extensive damage after a blaze in the early hours of Friday January 2.

Fire crews fought the inferno for nearly three hours after being called to the scene at 3.45am. The extent of the damage is so great that the building is regarded as unsafe for the fire service to enter to investigate the cause of the fire.

The owners of the pub are being contacted. The building will need such extensive repair work to make it viable that it will probably be razed to the ground.

The flames burnt through the roof and left broken glass strewn across the road. The area was cordoned off. The interior of the pub was devastated; the area near the bar was crushed after the ceiling caved in.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, speaking from the scene said the pub had been unoccupied for several weeks. The building was empty at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.
