Police are preparing to reopen a stretch of the A1 near Sawtry after a road traffic collision involving a Huntingdonshire District Council refuse lorry.

Officers were called to the exit slip road southbound at J15 for the B1043 Old North Road earlier today (January 16), with three people thought to have been travelling in the lorry at the time.

An air ambulance from Magpas also attended, landing at 11.03am, along with two ambulance crews from the East of England Ambulance Service who were called at 10.51am.

A spokesman said three people were treated at the scene, with one man, believed to be a passenger in his 50s, provided with pain relief and placed into an induced coma with “serious” injuries.

He was then airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he was reported to be in a serious but stable condition upon arrival.

A police spokesman said: “Another male passenger also suffered a serious but not life-threatening injury, while the driver, also a man, suffered a slight injury.”

Councillor Jim White, Executive Councillor for Operations, said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the families of those involved, and I would ask everyone to respect the privacy of their families at this difficult time. We will of course provide updates as and when they are available.”

It’s thought no other vehicles were involved.

The B1043 is expected to reopen in about an hour after the lorry has been recovered and debris removed.

Police are investigating the crash and urge anyone who saw what happened to call PC Leigh Fenton, at the road policing unit, on 101.
