THE Pheasant Inn at Keyston has introduced a complete smoking ban. The move at the thatched gastropub, near Thrapston, means its extensive facilities for tobacco-free prior to national No Smoking Day today (Wednesday).

John Hoskins, owner of Huntsbridge, which also includes The Falcon at Fotheringhay, near Oundle, and the Old Bridge Hotel at Huntingdon, said the time was right.

"We have just refurbished the dining room at The Pheasant and are also adding an outdoor eating area, so we had an excuse to change our policy. "Some of our best customers are smokers, but even they would prefer a smoke-free environment for enjoying high quality food and wine. Guests seem happy to pop outside for some fresh air - for the benefit of the rest of us."

He added: "The Falcon at Fotheringhay has been no-smoking for a year now and we have had only positive feedback. We are over a year away from a national ban but it is important to us to make the change right away.
