TRAFFIC calming measures are being drawn up for a Huntingdon road in a bid to protect children in the area and prevent motorists speeding.
Huntingdon Town Council has secured £25,000 of funding through the Minor Highways Improvement Scheme to introduce traffic calming measures on Sapley Road.
The announcement has been welcomed by Peter Jefferies, of Othello Close, who has been campaigning for years to have safety measures installed on the road.
Mr Jefferies told The Hunts Post: "The road has been a disgrace for many years. People drive too fast and recklessly along it. I believe it is one of the worst roads in the county."
He added: "It is a rat-run and you get a lot of speeding drivers who forget that families and children have to cross that road on their way to St Peter's and Thongsley schools.
"I'm fearful for the safety of the children who cross the road. My daughter has had three cats run-over on that road."
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire County Council, which is funding part of the scheme, said designs will be drawn up in the summer with work completed by the end of the financial year.
She added that the design not yet been decided and they are open to suggestions.
Mr Jefferies, 66, who is retired, believes the solution is to install one or two light controlled crossings and to reduce the speed limit to 30mph along the entire length of the road.
He added: "I'm glad they have recognised that something needs to be done but I am a realistic and I won't be holding my breath that anything will actually happen."
Huntingdon town councillor, Susan Mulcahy said the plans had come about due to concerns by local residents about speeding along Sapley Road.
She believes the best way to clamp down on speeding drivers would be to introduce a 40mph along the whole stretch of the road and for police to carry out regular speed checks.
