I AM finding it increasingly difficult to get the people in this area to realise most of these points are interconnected.
There appears to be an element in Huntingdonshire District Council who have a down on the commuter, and cannot see that commuting may be the only way of having employment of any value to those concerned. It also has to be realised that there is a growing number of people moving into the area because of the permitted building that is taking place.
There appears to be little real employment in the Huntingdon area available to newcomers, therefore people are going to work away from the area.
At least they are using public transport for part of the journey.
However, it has to be realised that the station car park is nearly always full from an early hour each day, so other sites have to be used.
The idea of milking the motorist for every penny available seems to be in the mind of the local councillors, but they have short memories. A few years ago did they not put a new charge on parking in Ramsey? Were there not words said and people deciding not to go to Ramsey as the number of shops seemed to make it unviable?
After words were said by the business group charges were revised.
Why not do that with Huntingdon? Have we anything so special in the town centre? Not really, so why go there when you can travel out to Bar Hill, Hampton, Peterborough, Kempston, Bedford, or even Chatteris, March, St Ives or St Neots?
It will not take long for the Board of Commerce to see what is happening and put it to the council that unless things are looked at, all that we will have left is a ghost town.
Many of the businesses rely on the shopping being done with a car. Without this system of shopping the volume would not sustain the business. The day of shoppers carrying 20kg and getting onto a bus and then walking a mile home are well gone whether you like it or not.
I would suggest councillors need to look at who elected them - they are not there for ever.
