CONTROVERISAL plans to site Cambourne's third primary school in Jeavons Wood are set to go ahead despite opposition from parents, who believe the plans are still not suitable.
Parents had been concerned about the site of the school, dangers posed by increased traffic heading to and from the site, and the loss of wildlife habitat.
A new scheme from Cambourne Consortium of Developers will see the school partly on the land designated for a golf course, and partly on a wooded area.
Previously the plan was entirely on the wooded area.
David Chare, project director for the Cambourne Consortium of Developers, said: "We understand parents' concerns about access to the site. In the medium to long term children from Great Cambourne won't be travelling to The Vine in Upper Cambourne - their catchment will be the new school - so congestion issues won't arise."
He added: "There is no suitable land to site a primary school in Lower Cambourne."
The new school is needed to cater for hundreds more children set to live in the village and is due to open in September 2008.
Angie Winter, a Cambourne resident and parent who had campaigned to find a new location of the settlement's third primary school, said she felt the compromise did not go far enough. She said: "Although I haven't seen the plans they do not sound like they will make any difference or go far enough to deal with the access problems."
Also upset by the compromise is Cambourne Parish Council. Chairman Cllr Ruth Poulton said she was in favour of the design but was concerned about access.
She said: "I do not want them to just shift it slightly and ruin the beautiful design of the school and not deal with the access problem."
SCDC will decide the planning application later this year.
