STUDENTS at Huntingdon Grammar School during the 1029s and early 1930s will remember with affection and gratitude Miss Vera Calverly, the dedicated and inspiring English mistress.
At the 75th Old Huntingdonians' Association anniversary reunion I spoke of her as "fearsome", instead of "formidable" - a temporary aberration of the mind for which I apologise humbly and without reservation.
She could be formidable, of course, if the occasion demanded, as a young policeman found when he had the temerity to enquire, after some trifling misdemeanour with her cycle. He was told that her age was "quite irrelevant".
