The county has been doing a lot of work on anti-skid road surfacing, and it is paying off in accident reduction terms. Skid-resistant surfacing and re-texturing is used in places such as approaches to roundabouts and pedestrian crossings.
Overall, accidents have reduced by 32 per cent at treated sites. Two particular sites saw an 86 per cent reduction in the 27 months after the treatment.
I cannot resist the unworthy thought that, if fewer of us tried to emulate Jeremy Clarkson or Michael Schumacher as we drive around, we could save a lot of money as that sort of treatment became unnecessary.
Elsewhere, the Huntingdonshire Area Joint Committee has just approved road safety improvements in the district, most notably the installation of average speed cameras on the infamous Forty Foot Bank.
