MORE Huntingdonshire students have been named as some of the best in the country.

Last week, The Hunts Post reported that students at St Ivo School and Sawtry Community College had been praised by examiner Edexcel.

This week, both Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon, Abbey College in Ramsey and Longsands in St Neots are celebrating the news that students are in the top 10 in their subjects.

In Ramsey, Miriam Storey was one of the 10 best GCSE art and design students - out of 36,294 candidates.

Miriam is now studying A Levels in art, English literature, history and biology and hopes to study fashion at Central St Martins College of Art and Design, in London.

Heike Riddle-Schneider's results place her amongst the top GCSE German students while classmate Jennifer Ansell's results show that, out of 12,704 candidates, Jennifer achieved one of the top 10 results in AS Level geography.

Wayne Birks, headteacher, said: "Naturally, I am absolutely delighted at the success of our students and it is a tribute to the hard work they have put in over the last few years."

In Huntingdon, Hinchingbrooke students Craig Linnell and Robert Knight were among the highest scoring candidates in this summer's GCE design and technology exams, beating more than 3,300 other students to get into the top 10.

Victoria Katherine Tyson was also among the top 10 students in GCSE art and design, out of 9,763 candidates.

Former Longsands student, Nick Botham has been named as yet another high-flying Huntingdonshire student.

Nick, 18, was highlighted by examiner Edexcel as being one of the UK's top ten media students, as well as winning a Cambridgeshire-wide media competition.

He sat his A levels at Longsands College in St Neots. His teachers were so impressed with his media coursework they entered it in a county competition and he was named the best student, winning four tickets for a guided tour of the BBC's London studios.

He is having a gap year, working full-time at A&N Audio, a St Neots-based electrical store, and has plans to go to university next year.

He is planning to produce his own feature film and has already written, produced, directed and edited several shorts. He also has a small sideline business making DVDs of school proms and weddings, which he hopes to build.

GCSE students at Hinchingbrooke celebrated their successes at an awards ceremony in the Performing Arts Centre on Thursday last week. Certificates and prizes were awarded for individual subject areas, overall performance and special prizes were given for community service, citizenship and leadership.

Winner of the music prize and the prize for the highest performance at GCSE, Matthew Howes, played the piano and student Megan Tapp performed a voice solo. Ex-student Mathew Bullimore, an Oxford University graduate and national gymnast, spoke to the students about his time at Hinchingbrooke and what success means to him.

Year Nine pupils were rewarded for their hard work in their SATs at a special assembly the next day.
