THE lives of motorists are being put at risk by people throwing stones and bricks at cars from a bridge over the A1 near St Neots, police have warned.

The latest attacks took place last week when on two different days motorists reported having stones thrown at their vehicles.

The offences took place on Wednesday and Thursday as vehicles passed under a flyover near Eaton Ford.

At 6.15pm on the Wednesday, the windscreen of a blue Mercedes was damaged on the A1 southbound carriageway.

The following day at 4.10pm, a driver of a white Iveco van saw a group of people standing on the flyover. As she passed under the bridge, she saw a piece of brick falling towards her. It smashed through the passenger window, creating a large hole and causing the glass surrounding it to crack.

Stones have also been thrown from the side of the road.

Sarah Shepherd, who lives in Eynesbury, had her car hit by a rock as she drove past the same flyover on the Wednesday at about 6.10pm.

She told The Hunts Post: "The road was quiet and the rock came from out of nowhere. They could have killed someone.

"If there had been a passenger in my car then they would have been a goner or, at the very least, seriously disfigured."

She suffered bruises to her arm in the incident and the rock smashed the passenger side window of her silver Vauxhall Tigra.

"I was very shocked and annoyed when it happened," said the 27-year-old sales manager, who was on her way from Buckden to St Neots.

Sarah added that she did not see who threw the rock as she was concentrating on the road.

Detective Sergeant Dave Reece said: "These offences are taken very seriously.

"Had a piece of brick or stone hit the driver's side window, it could have caused a collision resulting in serious injuries, or maybe even death.

"This mindless crime is putting lives at risk. If anyone has seen people throwing items off the bridge, or knows anything about these incidents, please get in touch."
