THE Mayor of Huntingdon has apologised and paid his fine for parking illegally in a town centre street.
Councillor Saeed Akthar initially said he would not pay a £30 fixed penalty notice he received in Princes Street on June 25.
The Mayor claimed his silver Mercedes was legally parked and said he had not wanted to walk a long distance to the function while wearing the valuable mayoral chain.
However, Cllr Akthar has since had a change of heart and paid the fine.
He told The Hunts Post: “I have decided to pay the fine. I made a mistake.”
The blunder sparked an angry reaction among Hunts Post readers, with many demanding Cllr Skthar should pay up.
