A WORLD famous Cambridgeshire heart and lung hospital is to stage the first ever UK live public broadcast of an operation.

Papworth Hospital, which is renowned for performing the country's first heart transplant in 1979, will take part in the broadcast tomorrow (Thursday).

Between 7pm to 9.30pm the operation will be viewed by an audience at Wellcome Collection, Euston Road, London.

The broadcast will feature Papworth heart surgeon Francis Wells and the theatre operating team at Papworth Hospital, who will be performing open-heart surgeon.

Mr Wells said: "This interactive broadcast is an opportunity to demystify surgery and encourage more people to understand the magnitude of what the heart is about and what it dies for us."

The satellite link will allow the audience of 220 people in London to question the surgical team as they carry out the complex reconstruction of a heart valve.
