HAVING lived in Spain for the last 20 years, I was shocked upon a return trip by how old the buses were and the lack of facilities at bus stations, in particular St Ives and Huntingdon.

Public transport was expensive, out of date and without any facilities for the public. People who are forced to use the buses as a means of transport are often the most vulnerable and a £2 single fare from Buckden to Huntingdon is an extortionate price.

Local transport chiefs could learn a lot from a trip to Madrid to see how a well-run, cheap transport system benefits not only the user but everyone.
