ISN'T it time someone educated St Neots schoolchildren who ride cycles that pavements are built for pedestrians and that the roads are built for bikes? Also that it is an offence to cycle on pavements?

I am increasingly concerned by the number of schoolchildren (and sometimes even adults, who should know better) who regularly cycle along the pavements in St Neots. Not only do they cause considerable annoyance, they also endanger life.

The worst place for this is St Neots town bridge. Many of these young cyclists race along the bridge pavement and pedestrians either have to pin themselves against the railings or risk their lives stepping into the traffic-congested road to let the cyclists get past.

If you speak to these schoolchildren, all you get is the usual foul-mouthed abuse so common today amongst our ill-bred younger generation.

I recently witnessed an elderly couple step into the road (to avoid these cyclists) right into the path of a bus coming over the bridge. Fortunately the driver was alert and avoided a collision. The following day, a motorcyclist was obliged to swerve to avoid a mum with a pushchair and a toddler, when she was forced off the bridge pavement by five schoolchildren on bikes.

We've heard a lot lately about the new Police Community Support Officers who are supposed to be patrolling our town centre. Where are they? They seem to be as invisible as the police officers they have replaced. Do we have to wait till someone is either killed or seriously injured before this matter is dealt with and this illegal activity is stopped once and for all?
