PEOPLE from Huntingdonshire have the opportunity this weekend to help massively improve the life of a 10-year-old girl.
Emilia Hubbard, from Swaffham Prior, near Newmarket, was diagnosed in February last year with aplastic anaemia, a rare blood condition.
The illness means that she has to have a transfusion of platelets every week at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and an eight-hour long blood transfusion every month.
Her condition means her immune system is defective. It prevents her from going to school or anywhere else where she might catch an infection, including birthday parties.
Emilia's hope for an improved life comes from a bone marrow transplant.
Her mother, Ann, told The Hunts Post: "She has been incredible. She tries to get on with her life. While she is having the blood transfusions, she does her schoolwork and she listens to music. She can still go for walks and we can go to the park. Next week we are hoping to have a picnic with friends. We can do things out in the open air."
Despite a world-wide search, so far there has been no bone-marrow match found for Emila.
But now a Bar Hill company which produces bar-codes, Domino, is holding a day-long bone-marrow clinic at its offices on Tuesday (May 19).
It is appealing to everyone in Huntingdonshire who is healthy, in the right age group and weighs eight stone or more to go along and join the register run by the Anthony Nolan Trust.
Posters to publicise the event are being displayed at Huntingdon Fire Station where Emilia's father, Phil, trains as a retained firefighter.
Sessions will take place from noon to 3pm and again between 5pm and 7pm.
INFORMATION: Members of the Anthony Nolan Trust will take a blood sample to be analysed later. The sessions are open to people between 18 and 40-years-old at Domino, Trafalgar Way, Bar Hill. To make an appointment, e-mail Sharon.email@example.com
