Hunts Council tax article ‘distortion’
YOUR article (October 13) on the fact that 30 per cent of the people questioned want to keep services and pay more Council Tax is a distortion of statistics.
YOUR article (October 13) on the fact that 30 per cent of the people questioned want to keep services and pay more Council Tax is a distortion of statistics.
In fact, although not published, this means that 70 per cent (the majority) want to cut Council Tax.
The council has wasted money with such projects as a new library, which was not needed. The old library was perfectly adequate. Not only does the new library have an unnecessary caf, which must be expensive to run and doesn’t appear to be well used, but now they have started to charge OAPs to take out talking books.
Also, we did not need expensive bus lanes, or computerised bus stops. This is waste which we are now paying for.

Editor’s note: What we actually reported was that two-thirds of respondents to Huntingdonshire District Council’s recent consultation on possible cuts indicated that they would be prepared to pay more Council Tax for HDC services. Libraries, bus lanes and bus stops are the responsibility of Cambridgeshire County Council, not HDC.
I THINK it is time that we had a referendum on the subject of the Council tax increase. Had the powers-that-be at HDC worded the web article correctly, I am very sure a lot more people would have replied.
So please don’t quote figures that are not a true reflection. Let everyone have their say: then and only then will you get the answer. Everyone knows how to save money, but HDC is very blinkered when this subject is discussed.
