HUNTINGDON could get another town centre pavement café if councillors agree next month.

Greggs the Bakers, which runs Bakers Oven in the High Street, wants to put six tables and 24 chairs on the pavement in Chequers Walk outside the shop.

But Cambridgeshire County Council, the highway authority, objects to the proposal, saying pedestrians would not have a wide enough footway, the surface is uneven, and a pavement café would add to the cost of maintaining the footway.

The matter will be decided by Huntingdonshire District Council's licensing and protection applications sub-group on Monday July 6.

Two other cafés - Starbucks in Chequers Walk and Costa Coffee in the High Street - already have permission to serve customers out of doors.
