A NUMBER of homes were evacuated in St Ives after a car caught fire inside a garage.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 1.57pm on Saturday (October 24) in Erica Road.

Crews set up a 100m cordon around the garage and evacuated nearby homes after discovering several cylinders.

They used two hose reels and one ground monitor to extinguish the fire and cool the cylinders so that they could be moved.

Crews returned to base by 4.38pm.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been electrical.

Sally Granshaw, a resident of Erica Road, said: "We were told we had to stay out of the cordon, as a car, which was being worked on with a welder in a garage, had caught alight. After a short wait we were told we could proceed on foot around the edge of the cordon to our property as it had emerged the cylinders contained just compressed air.

"Thankfully, this turned out not to be a major incident."
