Huntingdon’s link road is closed this morning after a tanker sunk into a collapsed sewer.

Edison Bell Way, between Ermine Street and George Street, has been shut to traffic for emergency repairs to a sewer running alongside the new road, which was opened in April.

A spokesman for Anglian Water said it thought a sewer down a layby next to the link was blocked so sent a tanker to clear the blockage. He added that it became evident quite quickly that the sewer had collapsed as the 20-tonne tanker had sunk into the ground.

The spokesman said that the road was closed to allow a crane to help remove the tanker from the hole and Edison Bell Way will be reopened once the tanker removed.

"Anglian Water apologises for any inconvenience caused by the closure," he said.
