Portholme Meadow near Huntingdon resembles the tundra as the district is caught in a cold snap from Siberia.

But the area has escaped the worst of the weather so far, only being hit by a series of flurries which caused a dusting of snow, together with some low temperatures.

Police are continuing to advise drivers to only travel if their journeys are necessary.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “We have been contacted about 39 collisions in the county from midnight until 4pm today (Wednesday). Five of these were in Huntingdonshire.

“We’re advising people to only make essential journeys and to take extra care on the county’s roads. People should also perform safety checks on their vehicle and take sensible precautions such as having blankets and making sure their mobile phone is fully charged.”
