THE Highways Agency was warning motorists to continue to avoid the A428 between Girton and Madingley on Thursday (April 19) evening.

The westbound stretch of the road remained closed following an earlier incident in which an HGV carrying car parts crashed into a safety barrier and struck bridge supports.

The Highways Agency said it was working to reopen one lane westbound as quickly as possible. The cargo was being transferred to another HGV, the damaged HGV was being recovered, and the barrier would be repaired overnight.

The repairs would require lane one to remain closed for most of the night, the agency added.

Diversion routes were in place, with drivers heading westbound advised to follow the solid black triangle signs taking them via the A14 westbound to junction 24, and the A1198 southbound, to rejoin the A428.
